While we are not experts in “sleep divorce”, Karen Asp wrote an article called “Getting a Sleep Divorce Is the Best Thing I’ve Ever Done for My Marriage – and My Health”. In the article, she talks about what people should know about sleep divorce and how it has helped her marriage.
So what exactly is a sleep divorce? It is when a married couple chooses to sleep separately at night. “According to a survey from Slumber Cloud, 12% of American couples have filed for a sleep divorce, and 30% have discussed it.”
For Karen, she was worried about her health. Her husband had a different sleep schedule, and often woke her up. She was lucky to get 6 hours of sleep a night, and she knew that was putting a strain on her health, and her marriage.
Expert Nate Watson, M.D., professor of neurology, addressed sleep divorce by saying, “I recommend couples explore the reasons for co-sleeping challenges, because there are solutions that can prevent the sleep divorce from happening…if the sleep continues to be a problem, a sleep divorce should be considered.”
The biggest downside to sleep divorce? The loss of intimacy you get from sleeping in the same bed as your spouse. If you are thinking about sleeping in separate beds, you might want to consider reconnecting on the weekends, when sleep isn’t quite as important.
“Couples should understand that the goal of a sleep divorce is the pursuit of sleep health and not a commentary on their overall relationship…Couples can have long, happy, healthy relationships, even if they don’t turn out the lights together at the end of the day.”
